Stratford Co-operative and Industrial Society Ltd

Stratford Co-operative and Industrial Society Ltd

The picture shows the first premises of this organisation, before they moved in, at the corner of Falmouth Street and Maryland Street in Stratford. Started by a group of men at Stratford Railway Works. In 1929 it amalgamated with the Edmonton Society to form the London Co-Operative Society.

At the wonderful we find another building similar to the one in Bow Road "Hoe Street, 277 Jubilee Branch of the Stratford Co-operative and Industrial Society. A  long range of shops with a plaque showing beehive motifs and a dedication to the opening. Built 1911 and 1915 by W H. Cockcroft, with two round-headed gables, a turret and a dome."

The modern co-operative movement started in the north of England in the mid 19th century. They run businesses for the benefit of the members rather than for the benefit of share-holders. The businesses are often food retailing though they can be anything including financial services and funerals. We are not sure that the word "Industrial" adds anything significant.
