The Reverend Augustine Charles Buckell, M.A.

First Vicar of St Saviour's, 1898 - 1936. Ordained in 1897 and became a curate at Christ Church, Ealing Broadway, and then vicar of St Saviours. Author of a number of religious books.

A newspaper report gives: "The Rev. A. C. Buckell, aged 61, vicar of St. Saviour's, Ealing, died from heart trouble, less than 24 hours after entering his church for the first time in six months to give thanks for convalescence."

In 2025 was selling a rare publication "Bazaar of Nations, Ealing Town Hall, London, 1920" which apparently has, inside, a photo of Buckell, but £90? Don't think so. It does however, have a lovely front cover, we hope you agree.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, adds that Augustine Charles Buckell was the second of the five children of William Buckell (c.1821-1890) and Sophia Ann Buckell née Goodale (1838-1909). His birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1874 in the Greenwich Registration District, Kent (now Greater London). He was baptised on 15 November 1874 in St Stephen's Church, Lewisham, Kent (now Greater London).

In the census that was conducted on 3 April 1881 he was incorrectly recorded as Augustus C. Buckell, aged 6 years and living at 49 Denmark Villas, Hove, Sussex (now East Sussex), with his parents and his four siblings: Mary Frances Buckell (1872-1939); Katherine Sophia Buckell (1877-1947); Frederick William Buckell (b.1879) and Edith Amy Buckell (1881-1950). His father was described as a curate with pupils.

He is shown as Augustine C. Buckell, aged 16 years and a scholar in the census that was undertaken on 5 April 1891 He was residing at 10 Powis Road, Brighton, East Sussex, with his widowed mother who was living on her own means, and three of his siblings: Mary Frances Buckell - a scholar and a school teacher; Frederick William Buckell and Edith Amy Buckell who was also listed as a scholar, together with a female boarder, a cook and a housemaid.

The 1907 edition of Kelly's Directory of Ealing, Middlesex (now Greater London), lists him as Rev. Augustus Charles Buckell, M.A. at The Limes, The Grove, Ealing. However, in the 1909 edition of Kelly's Directory of Clergy, they list him as Augustine Chas. Buckell, M.A. stating that he obtained his Master of Arts (M.A.) at Keble College, University of Oxford, Oxfordshire, that he was made a deacon in 1897 and a priest in 1898 in London, that he was the curate at Christ Church. Ealing, West London, and that his address was 20 The Grove, Ealing.

When he completed his census return form on 2 April 1911 he described himself as aged 36 years, a Clerk in Holy Orders and the curate in charge, living in St. Saviour's Clergy House, The Grove, Ealing, with: Thomas William Radbourne, aged 36 years - a Clerk on Holy Orders and an assistant priest; John Edgar Childs, aged 40 years - a boarder and a chartered accountant; George Williamson Brodribb, aged 35 years - a Clerk in Holy Orders and an assistant priest, together with two female housekeepers.

The 1912 edition of the Post Office Home Counties Directory lists him as Buckell, Rev. Augustine Charles M.A. (curate in charge of St Saviour's), St Saviour's Clergy House, The Grove, Ealing.

His death was registered as aged 61 years in the 3rd quarter of 1936 in the Brentford Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London). Probate records confirm that his address was St Saviours Clergy House, The Grove, Ealing and that he died on 17 August 1936. His body was buried at 11.30am on 19 August 1936 in Plot 16, Grave 12514 in Hanwell Cemetery, Uxbridge Road, London, W7. Probate was granted on 16 October 1936 to his sisters: Mary Frances Buckle and Katherine Sophia Buckle, both spinsters. His effects totalled £1,920-15s-6d.

He is shown as 'AUGUSTINE CHARLES BUCKELL' on the memorial cross in St Saviour's Church House Car Park, The Grove, London, W5 and as 'REVD•A•C•BUCKELL:PRIEST•IN•CHARGE' on the foundation stone at St Saviour's Church House, The Grove, London, W5.
