The Throgmorton Restaurant

Categories: Food & Drink

The Throgmorton Restaurant

In 1897 J. Lyons and Co. secured an 80 year lease on this site from the Worshipful Company of Drapers and built the restaurant in the basement with offices above. The restaurant opened in 1900 and became renowned as an eating place for bankers, insurance brokers and stockbrokers. It comprised several dining areas: the Oak Room; a Grill Room; the Millionaires' Room and, the most opulent, the Long Room - decorated with marble-lined walls and bevelled wall mirrors. The premises went through several refurbishments before Lyons disposed of the restaurant in the 1970s.  It changed hands and eventually closed either c.2000 or April 2013, accounts differ.
