Awarded the VC for his heroism on 31 July 1917, aged 23, while serving in the King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). "â„–1309 Twice leading a charge against machine gun posts and putting them out of action, he finally took command during an enemy counter attack. He held the position until told to retire, displaying remarkable valour and initiative. (Wieltje, Belgium)". Freemason at: â„–1309, Whitwell Lodge.
