Unity Theatre

Unity Theatre

Unity Theatre grew out of the Workers' Theatre Movement, agitprop street theatre, in the East End of London in the early 1930's.

Initially based in St Judes Hall, Britannia Street, NW1 (which we can't find: no Britannia Street in NW1 and no St Judes Hall at the King's Cross Britannia Street). In 1937, it moved to a former chapel in Goldington Street. That must be the "Zion Chapel' shown towards the top right of this , on what is now Unity Mews.

The end of theatrical censorship in 1968 was the beginning of the end for Unity. The theatre was destroyed by fire in 1975 but productions continued sporadically until 1994, when the site was sold for social housing.
