Awarded the VC for his heroism on 24 August 1916, age 43, while serving in the Scout Corps, 2nd South African Mounted Brigade. "Having withdrawn to a new position he found one of his wounded men had been left behind. Unmindful of personal danger he succeeded in reaching Corporal Bowker and [carried] him back. (Mlali, German East Africa)". Freemason at: â„–2685, Concordia Lodge.
