Painter, architect, and designer of gardens and interior furnishings. Baptised in Yorkshire, on 1 January 1686. Began as a sign and coach painter. While on the Grand Tour he met his chief patron and supporter, Lord Burlington (1694-1753). Designed a number of important London buildings, some still extant, including: Treasury Buildings Whitehall, Horse Guards Whitehall, some interiors at Chiswick House, and the landscaping of Alexander Pope's Twickenham Villa.
