William Nicholson

William Nicholson

Distiller, politician, cricket player, benefactor. Born Upper Holloway into a gin distillery family. They made Lamplighter gin at Three Mills on the River Lea. The business moved into running pubs partly through acquiring pubs that could not pay their gin bill.

Played cricket for Middlesex, 1845-69, and was a prominent member of Marylebone Cricket Club, giving them funds to purchase the freehold of Lord's and loaning funds for the erection of Lord's Pavilion. MCC changed their colours to those of the distillery. When he retired from cricket he became chairman of the family business.

Liberal MP for Petersfield in Hampshire. Died Westminster.
