William Sterndale Bennett

Composer. Born in Sheffield. He was accepted by the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) at the age of 10. They were so impressed with him that they waived his fees. By the age of twenty, he had become a successful concert pianist, and was invited to Leipzig by Mendelssohn. In Germany 1836–42 he also became friendly with Robert Schumann. He returned to teach at the RAM where his pupils included Arthur Sullivan and Hubert Parry. Although popular in his time, his music is not widely performed now.
