World Cup

International football competition, founded by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Apart from 1942 and 1946, it has been held every four years since its inception. Originally sixteen teams contested for the cup. This number was increased to twenty-four in 1982 and thirty-two in 1998.
