{On the front of the plinth:}
Spencer Compton, eighth Duke of Devonshire, KO, Born 1833, Died 1908.

The carving on the plinth is attractive with a snake knotted into a figure of eight above the lettering, art nouveau capitals at each corner and a fine crest at the back, so large that it overlaps the cornice.
