Alan Turing steel statue

Site: Bond, Seacole and Turing - steel statues (3 memorials)

W2, St Mary's Terrrace

At the southern end of St Mary’s Terrace, beside the bike track, these statues are extremely difficult to photograph, Turing in particular has escaped our focus.

Just to the right of our picture between the bike track and the statues there is a simple wooden bench. At each end, low down almost like you are not meant to see them, are two small steel plaques, as follows:

Plaque 1:
The characters for this Portrait Bench chosen by your community celebrate Sustrans winning a nationwide vote in 2007 to create new walking and cycling routes across the UK, funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

Plaque 2:
Alan Turing OBE, FRS, 1912 - 1954, father of computer science, WWII code-breaker who led cryptanalysis of the Enigma Machine.

Mary Seacole, 1805 - 1881, nursed wounded soldiers on the battlefield during the Crimean War.

Michael Bond OBE, author and creator of the beloved children's character, Paddington Bear.
