Albert McKenzie statue

Erection date: 24/10/2015

Inscription

{On a brass plaque at the front of the swooping plinth:}
Able Seaman Albert Edward McKenzie. Born Bermondsey, 23rd October 1898. HMS Vindictive, Zeebrugge raid 23rd April 1918. Died Chatham 3rd November 1918. Awarded the Victoria Cross for Most Conspicuous Gallantry. Our local hero.

The concrete plinth represents a section of the Zeebrugge harbour wall. We believe there were plans to use an actual section of the wall but that may not have happened.

2018: "Two metal rings which formed part of the Zeebrugge Harbour wall at the time of Albert McKenzie's brave acts" were added to the memorial.

McKenzie was born nearby and continued to live locally so this is a good site for the memorials.
