Plaque

Alfred the Great - Lewisham

Erection date: /11/1901

Inscription

{Around a portrait of Alfred the Great:}
Alfred the Great, Lord of the Manor of Lewisham.
Alfred the Great, born 849 died 901
I desire to live worthily all my days, that after death I might leave to my successors a memory of good work done.
Presented by the members of the Libraries Committee, November 1901.

The dates on the plaque differ from those usually given: date of birth varies but date of death is normally given as 26 October 899. We could find no other information about his connection with Lewisham and we're left with the impression that history only knows that he was Lord of the Manor of Lewisham because he left it in his will.
