Bentley House

Inscription

Bentley House, 200 Euston Road, erected 1938. Architect: W. Curtis Green RA, Son and Lloyd. Renovated 1990.

Site: Richard Bentley (2 memorials)

NW1, Euston Road, 200, Bentley House

These large commemoration panels are situated inside the porch of Bentley House. The Richard Bentley panel is on the western side of the porch, the Bentley House plaque is on the eastern side.

2024: William Schupbach contacted us saying: "The inscriptions on either side of the front door were created in 1990, when the building was occupied by the Wellcome Institute Library. Previously the black panels had been blank. The inscriptions were composed by William Schupbach and executed by David Kuhrt with his assistant Yolande. At the time pubs were beginning to commission computer-generated lettering, but David was an artist and poet, and his inscriptions were entirely designed and executed by hand. His lettering business was named Novalis. Later (c. 2015?) the building, while still owned by the Wellcome Trust, was converted into a student residence, but the two gilded inscriptions on Euston Road were retained."
