The Berlin Wall was erected by the East German security forces in August 1961 to seal off the East German sector of Berlin from the West. On 9 November 1989 the East Germans began taking down the wall, ending the harsh restrictions on civilian movement between East and West Berlin.

Over 80 people died between 1961 and 1989 attempting to escape over the wall into West Germany.

This section of the Berlin Wall came from near the Brandenburg Gate and was acquired by the Imperial War Museum in January 1991.
