Erection date: 13/12/1999

Inscription

{The panel just to the right of the brick structure explains how sundials work and how to read this one and includes:}
The Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers gave this sundial to the Corporation of London in 1999. The plinth contains exactly 2000 bricks to celebrate the millennium. The Company was given its charter by Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1568, and represents the trades of bricklaying, roof tiling and ceramic tiling.

About sundials generally: bout this Blackfriars sundial: About the Tylers and Bricklayers Company:

{The steel plate reads:}
This sundial was presented to the Corporation of the City of London by the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers, master Sir Idris Pearce CBE, TD, DL, to mark the beginning of the 3rd Millennium, AD 2000.

This polar sundial was unveiled by the Rt. Hon. Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Clive Martin, OBE, TD, DL, on the 13 December 1999.

Sundial designed by Piers Nicholson, Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers. Engineered and constructed by the corps of Royal Engineers with a generous contribution by Ibstock Building Products Ltd.

Can we guess what 'building products' Ibstock contributed, and how many? Difficult.

The badges of the three organisations are engraved with an inscription on the stainless steel gnomon, which has a matt dial-plate marked in Roman numerals for winter time and in Arabic numerals for summer time.

Two other sundials of a similar design have been built, near Greenwich and at the Royal Engineers Museum at Chatham.

Most of the text is professionally carved but 'Davey' is less skillful. Something about this memorial makes us think that Davey was a pet.
