Plaque

Bolingbroke Hospital - 1880, founded

Erection date: 1937

Inscription

Founded AD 1880 by the Reverend Canon Erskine Clarke, MA.

This is the 1937 central administration block and main entrance for the Hospital.

Site: Bolingbroke Hospital - group 1 (3 memorials)

SW11, Wakehurst Road

The Erskine Clarke plaque is directly above the entrance porch, between the first and second floor windows.

The 1906 stone is on the left side wall, facing the porch.

The war memorial is inside the foyer of the building.  In our photo of that memorial you can see the impressive and unusual green marble which clads all the walls in the ground floor public spaces.  Integral to the design of this space are the names above the internal doors: "Waiting room", "Matron", etc.

The building is now an academy school, , so you may wonder how we gained access to all the delights inside.  We were lucky enough to visit the area during Easter holidays and even luckier to meet Martin, facing the camera in our photo. He's the Estates and Operations Director at Bolingbroke Academy and was there overseeing some maintenance work and is, we discovered, very interested in the history of his building and was delighted to share.

We have grouped the memorials on this hospital into 3 groups: group 1, group 2, group 3.
