Bonner Street WW1 memorial

Inscription

To the glory of God and in grateful memory of the men of  Mace St. and Tagg St. who gave their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1918.

{A list of 26 names in alphabetic sequence. See Sebjects commemorated.}

"Love shall tread out the baleful fires of anger and in its ashes plant the tree of peace."

Mace Street and Tagg Street were two Victorian streets on the east side of Bonner Street, now lost to the Cranbrook Estate. shows the old street layout.

The quotation is from '' by the Quaker, John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892).

This lovely ceramic swaddled baby style of plaque is rare but does appear elsewhere in London - see Infants Hospital.

E2, Hartley Street, Bonner Steet Primary School

The plaque was originally on the west side of Mace Street, on the wall between houses 21 and 23.  It was moved here when those buildings, along with lots of others, were removed to make way for the massive 1963 Cranbrook Estate. We'd love to find a photo of this memorial in its original location.
