Brewery - War Memorial

Inscription

In memory of the men who gave their lives for their country in two world wars, 1914 - 1918 & 1939 - 1945.

This is a loosely-worded plaque. We don't think it really means ALL the men lost in both World Wars, just those that worked at the Brewery.

EC1, Chiswell Street, 52

Here in 1750 Samuel Whitbread established the first purpose-built mass-production brewery in Britain. In 1976 it brewed its last beer and "The Brewery" is now a conference centre and event venue. When we were last there women were arriving in stunning saris for an Indian wedding. Men were probably arriving as well but we didn't notice them.
