Brixton Speaks

Erection date: 2011

Inscription

"Brixton Speaks is an artwork intended to reflect back at the people who live, work and shop in Brixton Market and its environs the way they themselves speak. Over a month long period during the early summer of 2009, fragments of speech were noted down on Electric Avenue, in the arcades, and along Brixton Road. These were either conversational exchanges, or one half of mobile phone calls. Carefully edited, these speech-bites have now been incorporated into an electronic signboard that displays them both in the order they were first heard, and then rearranged so that they form new conversations or monologues. The aim of Brixton Speaks, is not to antagonise, shock, or distort, but simply to mirror the great vigour, invention and diversity of Brixtonians" - Will Self.

Not a memorial but a celebration of the local people, pictures of this artwork can be found at .

SW9, Electric Avenue

In our photo the Brixton bomb plaque is on the wall above the person in the woolly hat. It had to be raised to this height when the Iceland supermarket started parking their cage crates in front of it.
