This plaque has been erected by the Jewish East End Celebration Society in memory of Daniel Mendoza (1761 - 1836) the father of scientific boxing, who was buried in a spot nearby.

This plaque was unveiled by Sir Henry Cooper on 4th September 2008

Mendoza's burial site, "a spot nearby", is the Nuovo Sephardi cemetery in the grounds of Queen Mary College, just behind the building this plaque is on.

Our location photo was taken on 2014. We returned in 2024 for the close-up photo and were saddened to see the green area almost surrounded by a wall of large wheelie bins.
