Daniel Solander

Inscription

{3 sides of the boarding around a tree carry painted text:}
Swedish botanist Daniel Solander (1733 – 1782) sailed with Captain Cook and was buried here.
Solander catalogued natural history collections at the British Museum using Carl Linnaeus’ taxonomy.
If a tree dies plant another in its place. Carl Linnaeus (1707 -1778).

Site: Swedish Church - E1 (3 memorials)

E1, The Highway, Swedenborg Gardens

When the church was here the address was Prince's Square. Our pin is positioned on the font, the boards around the trees are to the west of that. See for some evocative photographs of the run-down elegance that this area used to possess. When the church was demolished the LCC took over ownership and the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association laid it out as a garden. The Blitz then did its worst and then modern housing estate design came along.
