Bust

Dickens bust - SW1

Site: Dickens and Chaucer busts (2 memorials)

SW1, Parliament Street, 48, Red Lion Inn

These two busts are above the second floor bay windows, Dickens on Parliament Street, Chaucer on the return in Derby Gate. The building dates from about 1900 though a plaque erected by the management claims the pub dates from 1435. The stripy building behind is Shaw's New Scotland Yard.

Here David Copperfield, when too young, attempts to order a glass of Genuine Stunning Ale. That explains Dickens' bust but Chaucer's? We can find nothing to connect him to this location. Maybe they just wanted another English writer of comparable fame.
