Statue

Edward I

Erection date: 1903

The sculptor's name is inscribed on the stone below the feet.

Site: Edward I and Edward VII (2 memorials)

WC1, High Holborn, 114 - 115, Kingsgate House

These 2 kings sit precariously outside the 7th floor dangling their feet over the traffic. Despite being substantially bigger than life-size they are very difficult to spot and are little known. We have to thank for drawing them to our attention.

The building, 1903-4, was designed by Arthur Keen. The pediments between the 3rd and 4th floor windows are inscribed "1903" and "E.H.K.F.C." although the sequence of the letters is not certain and their meaning unknown to us.

has some good photos and points out that this building is part of the Baptist Union complex. The Edwards were, at the time and still are, the first and last Edwards to sit on the throne of England.

2024: The statues are both covered with pigeon-repelling netting but its blue and the statues are now barely visible.
