Father Thomas Byles of St. Helen's Catholic Church Ongar, left this station on 10 April 1912 to join RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage. He died assisting and comforting others after the ship struck an iceberg.

Although we have not been able to find this plaque we have not marked it as 'lost', believing it to be on some part of the site not available to the general public. If you know where it is please tell us.

There was no sign of the plaque when we visited the site in February 2020, and the station was locked. We thank for their photo, taken in 2014, and showing the plaque on an old brick wall which could be anywhere on the site.
We checked on Google Streetview, which has just the , not showing our plaque, but interesting in another way. The trolley stacked with vintage leather suitcases, the platform area stuffed with old enamel signs, a blue police box, statue of liberty, etc. - all indicate the heritage enthusiasts that run the .
