They stood at the end of the world.
The first quotation is adapted from 'For the Fallen' by Laurence Binyon. The second quotation is adapted from Wilfred Owen's 'Spring Offensive'.
In 2019 we learnt, at the Putney Society website, that the Putney and Wandsworth Historical Society have traced the 343 men of Putney who lost their lives fighting in WW1 and that plans exist to commemorate all of them in the streets where they lived. On that basis we've guessed that the Putney Society were involved in installing this plaque.
2024: The songwriter and musician, wrote to us: “My new album ‘Branches of a Dream’ includes a tribute to the 4 men from Festing Road who never came back. I used to live nearby, and the plaque moved me so much I wrote the song .“
