Plaque

Festival of Britain - N16

Erection date: 1951

Inscription

Festival of Britain, 1951, Award for Merit.

Site: Festival of Britain - N16 (1 memorial)

N16, Somerford Grove

The Somerford Estate has 12 blocks and we believe the award was for the whole estate, not just this block. The architect and landscape designer, Frederick Gibberd, designed the estate in 1945-49 (and in Poplar the Chrisp Street Market with its distinctive clock tower, in 1951). See a similar plaque in N7 for information about them.

The sky was getting increasingly dark - we only just got these photos before the heavens opened and drenched us.
