Flower & Dean Estate - opened

Erection date: 18/7/1984

Inscription

Toynbee Housing Association
Flower & Dean Estate
opened by HRH the Prince of Wales
on 18th July 1984.

We believe Toynbee is now (2014) part of One Housing but mergers in the housing association world are frequent and confusing.

Site: Rothschild Buildings arch (2 memorials)

E1, Flower and Dean Walk

The stone plaque is in our picture on the wall to the right of the arch. The railings on either side of the arch carry the date 1984.

gives the history of this area. Developed by John Flower and Gowan Dean after 1655, Flower and Dean Street deteriorated to what was thought to be a dangerous slum and was demolished in 1892, to be replaced by Rothschild Buildings. These in their turn were replaced in 1984 by the games area of the Flower and Dean Estate.
