The statue was first erected in Palace Yard in 1832 and moved to this site in 1867, the first statue in Parliament Square.

2025: At we learnt that this statue killed a man.  During its creation it fell on one of Westmacott's assistants, Vincent Gahagan. killing him.  This happened in Westmacott's foundry in Brewer Street, Pimlico, on 28 December 1831.
