Site: George, Duke of Cambridge (1 memorial)

SW1, Whitehall

Dec 2011 our friends at  discovered a tradition that seems to be totally unknown except to those that enact it. To quote from Discovering London: "either the Blues and Royals or the Life Guards (whichever is on guard on Christmas Eve) put a hay net on the horse and bed it down and on New Year’s Eve it gets taken down by the opposite guard." What larks! . We'd forgotten all about this, until we happened to be passing by on Christmas day 2014, when we took our own hay-laden picture. Can a horsey person explain what the red ties on the tail are all about?

In November 2012 this statue was subjected to the indignity of a naked man sitting on the Duke's head. .

2023: The 1906 building in the background of our photo (to the east of the statue) is the Old War Office. From   "Previously home to the operations of military leaders like Winston Churchill, the property has been reinvented as the UK’s first Raffles hotel, with luxurious rooms starting at £1,100 ... per night."
