George Lansbury, 1859 - 1940, Member of the Poplar Borough Council, 1903 - 1940, Mayor 1919 - 20 & 1936 - 37, Member of Parliament, Minister of the Crown, Privy Councillor. A great servant of the people. The house which stood here was his home for 23 years and this garden was created in his memory by public subscription, 1955.

Site: George Lansbury (2 memorials)

E3, Bow Road, 39

Lansbury's house was destroyed by bombs only a few months after he died.
We're sure Tower Hamlets had a good reason for creating a new plaque with almost exactly the same words as those on the, much more dignified, plaque attached to the stone, but we can't see them.
