In 1944 a group of musicians came together to play the almost forgotten music known as jazz. They would meet at The Red Barn, Barnehurst and play music which had its roots in New Orleans half a century earlier. They were known as George Webb's Dixielanders. From here sprang the revival of jazz in Britain which has given immeasurable pleasure to countless music lovers ever since.
This plaque was unveiled on 4th July 1985 in tribute and with thanks to the original band.
