Greenwich roundels - Howard

Inscription

Howard

Site: Greenwich roundels (13 memorials)

SE10, King William Walk, Discover Greenwich (Royal Naval College, Pepys Building)

The roundels on the north, river-facing, frontage are occupied by, left to right: Anson, Drake, Cook, Howard, Blake, Benbow, Sandwich, Rodney, Duncan, Collingwood, Howe, Nelson, St Vincent. The reason for this particular sequence is obscure to us; it's certainly not by date of birth or death. Any ideas?

The , was built as the Royal Naval College, Pepys Building, in two phases: 1874-5 by Colonel Clarke RE, then 1882-3 by General Pudsey RE.
