Inscription

Helena Normanton, 1882 - 1957, barrister and advocate for women's rights, lived here, 1919 - 1929.

Site: Helena Normanton (1 memorial)

WC1, Mecklenburgh Square, 22

The plaque marks the address where Normanton lived as a junior barrister in the early part of her legal career. It was nominated by Doughty Street Women, a group of barristers within Doughty Street Chambers and was erected almost exactly 100 years after an important day for Normanton: on 26 October 1921 she passed her Bar finals, and also married.

has: "Whilst living there, she funded her training and supplemented her income by letting rooms in the large property". This was how her mother had supported the family when the father died and Helena was only four.

We thank our colleague Alan Patient for these photos.
