Hither Green and Sydenham WW1 air raids

Erection date: 21/10/2017

Inscription

In memory of those who lost their lives through enemy air raids 1917 - 18, buried here and nearby:
Hither Green 19th October 1917
{Followed by 15 names. See Subjects commemorated}.
Sydenham 19th May 1918
{Followed by 13 names. See Subjects commemorated}.

Restoration supported by Heritage Lottery Fund & Ladywell Ward Assembly.

An earlier memorial had become indecipherable and was replaced by this one in 2017.

The memorial gives the gender and age so we can analyse the deaths: 19 females of which 8 were children (below 18); 9 males of which 5 were children. The youngest child was 3-year old Edith Elizabeth Kingston. Of course many of the men were away fighting in the war.
