After losing too many Zeppelins, the Germans started using Gotha aircraft for bombing raids. Sydenham was one of the last raids of the war. The newly formed RAF put up considerable resistance, destroying many of the planes. A 100kg bomb fell on the corner of Sydenham Road and Fairlawn Park. It killed eighteen people including five soldiers, and destroyed several businesses. More information at .

First victim of the 1848 cholera outbreak in Lambeth.  22 year-old unemployed labourer of 26 Lower Fore Street. He fell ill on 30 September 1848 and died the following morning.Â
