Plaque

Holy Trinity, Cloudesley Square - WW1

Inscription

The Great War 1914 – 1918
During the air raids of the Great War the crypt of this church was used as a shelter for 2000 people. A volunteer patrol kept guard day and night. In the midst of peril We came to no harm.
Thanksgivings service in crypt Jan  28, 1919.
We thank God For our safe keeping

Stephen Charles Rees-Jones, Vicar

As you can tell from the photograph, this modern plaque is extremely difficult to read, especially the last line. It's possible that it was erected on the centenary of the thanksgiving service, i.e. on 28 January 2019.

This is the first memorial we have found to an air-raid shelter where the people "came to no harm".
