Houndsditch murders

Erection date: 16/12/2010

Inscription

Near to this spot on the 16th December 1910 three City of London Police Officers were fatally wounded whilst preventing a robbery at 119 Houndsditch.
In commemoration of Sgt Robert Bentley, Sgt Charles Tucker, PC Walter C. Choat, whose courage and sense of duty will not be forgotten.

Two other officers were crippled for life. The plaque does not mention the Sidney Street Siege but it is so closely connected we've added it as a Subject Commemorated.

Site: Houndsditch murders (1 memorial)

EC3, Cutler Street

The plaque is on the low wall, just to the right of "Cutler Street". (Note that Cutler Street does a right angle here.) The plan was to burgle the jewellers at 119 Houndsditch by breaking in from the house behind (rented for the purpose), which fronted onto Cutler Street, opposite this plaque. All of the buildings connected with the Houndsditch murders and the Sidney Street Siege are long gone.
