Site: James Barry - 1st plaque (1 memorial)
W1, Eastcastle Street, 36
At the time of Barry's residence at no.36, the road was known as Castle Street, East. In 1881 the Society of Arts erected this plaque on Barry's house. That house was demolished c.1925 and replaced with the building there now on which Westminster City Council have erected a green plaque.
At source the image is captioned: "J. Bryant. The House of James Barry, R.A., 36 Castle Street, Oxford Market" but has no date. We'd put it early 1800s possibly prompted by Barry's death in 1806, long before the plaque was erected in 1881. Note the fire protection plate between the first floor windows. Also note the dilapidated condition of the house - we are surprised it stood long enough to receive the plaque.
