Site: James Bradley (1 memorial)

E11, Grove Park, 2, Grove House

The site commemorated by this plaque is actually thought to be just the other side of Grove Park, about where the Co-op now is, but Grove House, being owned by the Council, was an easier placement. For more about the important and historic astronomy research carried out at this site see Bradley's page.

Grove House, built 1890, used to be ‘Little Garth’, 'garth' being an archaic Northern word for a yard or garden. Even from the outside, one can see many delightful architectural flourishes, such as the panels of pargetting. In the 1950s it was used by a GP, Dr. Corner, who had his surgery here, and it became known as the Corner House (as indeed it is). It is now used by Age Concern's Allan Burgess Centre and upstairs are offices used by a range of small local businesses.
