Joan Littlewood - Stratford statue

Erection date: 4/10/2015

Inscription

{On a plaque attached to the front of the plinth:}
Joan Littlewood

This bronze statue, called The Mother of Modern Theatre, is based on an iconic photograph of Littlewood in the 1970s, when the theatre was threatened with demolition, sitting on rubble in almost exactly this location. The actor Murray Melvin (1932 – 2023) whose early career had been greatly assisted by working with Littlewood, led the campaign to erect this statue.
