Jonathan Tyers (1702 - 1767)

Jonathan Tyers was born on Bermondsey Street and is particularly remembered for his purchase of Vauxhall Gardens in Lambeth. Under his management, Vauxhall Gardens became well known as a place of fashionable entertainment in the eighteenth century.

The wool and leather trade grew significantly in the local area during the 18th and 19th century and the Tyers family had connections with the wool trade in particular. Records show that the property known as Whites Gardens, situated on the east side of Bermondsey Street, was in the ownership of the Tyers family from 1703. As Tyers Gate is found on the opposite side of Bermondsey Street it is believed that the Tyers family residence was located in this area.

Two small council estates, built during the 1930s, carry the names of Tyers and Whites Grounds and mark the area historically associated with the family.

Jonathan Tyers is buried at St Mary Magdalen in Bermondsey Street.
