Lloyd's of London war memorial plaque

Erection date: 2/7/2008

Inscription

{On a brass plaque in the porch:}
The memorials on either side of this arch, commemorating the 434 men of Lloyd's who gave their lives in two world wars, were unveiled by HRH the Duke of Gloucester and Lord Levene, Chariman of Lloyd's, on July 2nd 2008.

Site: Lloyd's of London 1928 arch (4 memorials)

EC3, Leadenhall Street, 12

This arch was the entrance to Lloyd's 1928 building. 37 feet high, of Portland stone, it was retained and now, rather incongruously, sits in front of the high-tech 1986 building. has some comments on this extreme example of facadism. In the arched porch there are 3 plaques. To the right of the door a dull inscription, headed "Lloyd's 1925", gives the composition of the building committee of the 1928 building. It also names the architect: Sir Edwin Cooper. the other two, collected here, are to the left of the door, the brass plaque being above the inscription.  The lists of war dead are inset in window-like openings either side of the porch.  An appreciation of the sculpture in the pediment can be found at .
