London Salvage Corps

Inscription

On this site stood the headquarters of the London Salvage Corps, 1907 to 1960.

Site: London Salvage Corps (1 memorial)

EC4, Watling Street

We came across a reference to this HQ in the memoir “My Candle at Both Ends” by John Carveth Wells (1911 – 1946).  Aged 12 his mother took him to stay with her cousin, Colonel Charles Fox, “the founder {we think that is incorrect} and active head of the London Salvage Corps, an appendage of the Fire Brigade. To me, his large apartment was a most romantic place, for not only was it situated in what had been a real Roman road – Watling Street, in the heart of the City of London – but it was actually right on top of the Corps H. Q. On the ground floor was the Action Station, and I had a grand time examining the fire-engines, ladders, tenders and salvage equipment.”
