Lyceum Theatre

Erection date: 13/2/2006

Inscription

The Lyceum
Henry Irving was the first actor to be knighted (1895). From 1878 - 1902 he managed the Lyceum Theatre. Whilst working at the Lyceum as Irving’s acting manager, Bram Stoker wrote Dracula.
This plaque was unveiled by Ian McKellen (KBE 1988) on 13th February 2006 to commemorate the centenary of Irving’s death.
Plaque donated by The Edgar Allan Poe Society

Edgar Allan Poe's maternal grandparents performed as actors at this theatre, which explains the Society's involvement in this plaque.

WC2, Wellington Street, 21

Either side of the portico, just below the frieze, are two large dates: 1834 and 1996. These indicate: the original year of this building, and the year it re-opened as a theatre after decades being dark.
