LDN WMN
Madge Gill by Pang
LDN WMN is a series of free public artworks across London this autumn. These have been created by women and non-binary artists inspired by unsung women heroes from the city's history.
LDN WMN is a collaboration between City Hall and Tate Collective. It is part of the Mayor, Sadiq Khan's #BehindEveryGreatCity campaign which marks 100 years since the first women won the right to vote in the UK.
Madge Gill was born in Walthamstow in 1882. A self-taught, visionary artist, she created both meticulous and monumental artworks, skillfully exploring different techniques and formats including paints, inks and textiles. Although relatively unknown at the time she is now considered a prolific and powerful artist.
The mural artwork is inspired by Madge Gill's iconic free flowing drawing techniques. Using mainly black and white, her visionary drawings often feature women's faces surrounded by fluid repetitive patterns of checkerboards, grids and stairways.
The mural is part of a wider project curated by Works by Madge Gill celebrating the artist with events taking place in 2019.
