Plaque

(lost) Marchioness at RFH

Inscription

Near this spot on Sunday 20th August 1989 the pleasure boat Marchioness was in collision with another vessel and sank with the loss of 51 lives.

This dark plaque, only about 3 inches square, is attached to a wooden lifebelt holder which in turn is attached to the base of one of the ornamental lampposts fronting the river.

SE1, South Bank, Royal Festival Hall

We have found three (identical) plaques on the South Bank riverside recalling this disaster, as follows: Royal Festival Hall - this one, National Theatre, London Eye.

Our colleague, Alan Patient, tells us (September 2010) that this plaque is no longer in situ. Check the one at the National Theatre for the current status of all 3.
