Mary Quant 2

Inscription

Dame Mary Quant, fashion designer, opened her boutique, Bazaar, on this site in 1955.

We photo'ed this plaque in April 2025.

Site: Mary Quant (2 memorials)

SW3, Kings Road, 138a

The blue plaque was unveiled by Quant's son Orlando Plunkett Greene in September 2019 and by August 2020 it had been replaced with the purple one.

Before we knew about the purple plaque Jan Elson pointed out that there was something very odd about the "King's Road" on the (blue) plaque - and not just the apostrophe. The street name looks like a late addition but without it there would be an empty space. Perhaps "Kings Road" was accidentally omitted from the (non-English Heritage) plaque so had to be stuck on afterwards? And, sorry to be picky, but does the text appear to you to be drooping at the left? Maybe it's our photo.

2024: Keith Howard explained: "The plaque was a 19 month project by Sarah Farrugia and Keith Howard. It was sponsored by Cadogan Estates who are the landlords of much of Chelsea including 138a King's Road, the site of Quant's boutique Bazaar. The centre of the plaque displays Mary Quant's daisy logo."
