Fountain

Metcalf fountain

Erection date: 1895

Inscription

{On the plinth:}
The gift of C. T. P. Metcalf, 1879

No attractive detail to show so we've taken the opportunity to show the metal door that most fountains of this date have, presumably giving access to the mechanism that supplies water, only, nowadays they don't.

Site: Metcalf fountain (1 memorial)

N8, Middle Lane, Priory Park

A nearby information board gives: "The Metcalf Fountain was originally located in Crouch End Broadway. It was donated by Charles Thomas Page Metcalf in 1879 to replace the village pump. It was moved to the Pleasure Grounds after the Broadway Clock Tower was built in 1895, itself recognition of the urbanisation of Crouch End and commemorating the work of Henry Reader Williams."

We feel the date probably gives a clue to what this substantial fountain was erected to commemorate, but we can't think what. Any ideas?
